David Parris

David Parris, born and raised in the small farming town of Chilhowie, Virginia, grew up with a strong work ethic instilled by his family and rural upbringing. Influenced by his father, a World War II veteran, and a retired Army Sergeant Major, Raymond Williams, David’s decision to join the U.S. Air Force in 1985 marked the beginning of a transformative 21-year military career.

Seeking opportunities beyond his hometown, David enlisted as a ground transportation specialist, initially known as a 60350 and later reclassified as a 2T1.His role involved operating heavy equipment, including buses, tractor-trailers, and forklifts, as well as coordinating cargo and personnel transportation. During Desert Shield and Desert Storm, David’s expertise proved critical as he facilitated the loading of C-5 aircraft with supplies and troops bound for the Middle East. David’s assignments took him to various locations, including two deployments to Saudi Arabia at the 4404th Composite Wing.

His time there, particularly at Cobar Towers, was fraught with tension. In 1996, David left the base just three months before it was devastated by a bombing. These experiences highlighted the dangers of military service but also deepened his resolve and sense of duty. While his military journey included many rewarding moments, David also faced significant challenges. One of the most traumatic occurred in 1992 at Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, when David witnessed the aftermath of a triple homicide committed by a soldier in distress.

Additionally, the suicides of three service members under his command tested David’s leadership and emotional strength. Through these experiences, David learned the importance of maintaining composure and providing support during crises. Rising to the rank of Master Sergeant (E7), David became a respected leader, known for his ability to mentor and motivate his team. He credited the Air Force with equipping him with a “toolbox” of life skills, including crisis management, decision-making, and leadership.

These skills not only defined his military career but also prepared him for success in civilian life. David’s dedication to personal growth was evident in his use of the GI Bill to earn a master’s degree. He often emphasizes the life-changing opportunities the military offers, urging young people to recognize the value of education and career development within the armed forces. For David, the Air Force provided a path to defy the limitations of his upbringing and build a fulfilling life. After retiring in 2006, David transitioned into civilian life, joining the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) in 2016.

His military experience and leadership skills have been invaluable in his role, where he continues to serve with the same commitment and professionalism that defined his Air Force career. David is also a passionate advocate for veterans, encouraging them to utilize VA benefits and seek the support they deserve.

He frequently mentors younger veterans and service members, sharing his experiences and providing guidance to help them navigate challenges and opportunities. One of David’s proudest moments came in 2022 when a former TSA colleague, inspired by David’s advice, enlisted in the Air Force and began a successful military career. Reflecting on his time in the military, David considers it one of the best decisions of his life. He fondly recalls the camaraderie among his peers, the sense of family within the service, and the opportunities to travel and experience the world.

These experiences, combined with the discipline and leadership skills he developed, have left a lasting impact on his life. Now residing in Pinellas County, Florida, David remains an active member of his community. He continues to mentor young people, encouraging them to take that “first step” toward a brighter future, whether through military service or other avenues. His story is a testament to the transformative power of the military and the importance of resilience, leadership, and lifelong learning. David Parris’s journey from a small-town farm boy to a respected leader in the Air Force exemplifies the values of hard work, dedication, and service.
