Emilio Belisle
Emilio Belisle, a Marine Corps veteran who served from 1998 to 2012, reflects on his military career and the profound impact it had on his life. Emilio, born in Honduras, immigrated to the U.S. at the age of six and grew up in the projects of New York. Faced with limited opportunities, Emilio enlisted in the Marine Corps straight out of high school, seeing the military as a way to escape a potentially bleak future. The Marine Corps provided him with a path to growth, discipline, and a deep sense of belonging and service to his new country.
During his 14 years of service, Emilio held various roles but emphasized that it wasn’t the specific jobs that stood out—it was the experiences and the chance to serve in combat zones. He was stationed in Japan and Spain before being deployed to Iraq in 2005. Emilio recounts the thrill and pride of deploying to combat theaters, where Marines are trained to be riflemen first, regardless of their Military Occupational Specialty (MOS). This deployment marked a pivotal moment in his career, as he faced the realities of war, including an intense convoy mission where his vehicle narrowly avoided destruction by an IED.
As a first-generation immigrant, Emilio gained invaluable opportunities through the military, including using the GI Bill to earn a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and purchasing his first home with a VA loan. He attributes much of his success to the leadership skills and discipline instilled in him by the Marine Corps, which continue to guide him in his civilian life. After transitioning out of the military, Emilio found his place in the mortgage lending field, where he now serves as a Vice President, helping clients—particularly veterans—navigate the complexities of home buying.
One of Emilio’s proudest moments was assisting a homeless veteran in securing a home through a VA loan, transforming the veteran’s life within 45 days. This experience deepened his commitment to helping veterans achieve stability and utilize the benefits they’ve earned. Now a father of five, Emilio balances his career with raising his family and supporting his children’s future. His journey, from a young immigrant with little direction to a Marine and successful professional, serves as an inspiring example of resilience, service, and the power of mentorship.
