Forrest Antioco

Forrest Antioco, a six-year U.S. Air Force veteran, shares his experiences serving in the Air National Guard and how the military shaped his life. Born in Clearwater, Florida, but raised in Warner Robins, Georgia, Forrest grew up in a town heavily influenced by the Air Force. Surrounded by military families, he was drawn to enlist after realizing the financial burden of college. Joining the Air National Guard allowed him to fund his education while immersing himself in the structured and disciplined world of the military.

Forrest served as part of the Security Forces, the Air Force’s law enforcement branch, responsible for securing high-value resources like dignitaries, drones, and military installations. His time in the Guard was mostly focused on preparing for deployments, as active-duty personnel handled on-base security in the U.S. It was overseas, during deployments, where Forrest and his fellow Guardsmen played a critical role in protecting the perimeter of bases and ensuring the safety of vital military assets.

He recalls the deep camaraderie felt during deployments, where rank and status took a backseat to teamwork and mission success. However, upon returning to the U.S., the environment shifted. Forrest found the political aspects of military life back home frustrating, with a focus on minor infractions and a loss of the tight-knit bond that made overseas deployments fulfilling. This growing dissatisfaction with the stateside culture eventually led him to leave the military in 2021.

Forrest has since transitioned into the real estate industry, working in construction and flipping houses, following in the footsteps of his family’s involvement in rental properties. He plans to obtain his real estate license in Georgia, where he will continue working as a project manager. Although he sometimes misses the military and the opportunities it provided, Forrest is content with his decision to leave and has transitioned smoothly back into civilian life.

Reflecting on his time in the military, Forrest believes it gave him a deeper appreciation for life and a sense of purpose. He encourages others to consider the opportunities the military offers but also to be aware of the challenges that come with long-term service. His advice to young people considering the military is to think carefully about their interests, as the military offers a wide range of career options beyond just combat roles. Forrest emphasizes the importance of mentorship and helping others transition out of the military into successful civilian careers.
