Linda Gause, married to John Gause for 55 years, speaks lovingly about her husband’s military service and their life together. John, older than Linda, served in the U.S. Army for 26 years, having been stationed in multiple locations throughout his military career, including Germany and Vietnam. His dedication to the service saw him participate in two tours in Vietnam, where he worked as a medic, first on the ground and later in helicopters, evacuating injured soldiers to medical facilities. His role was dangerous, but it was vital to saving lives in the harsh conditions of war.

John earned numerous military decorations, including three Purple Hearts and at least one Bronze Star, though Linda admits that she isn’t entirely sure of all the accolades her husband received. Despite this, she expresses deep pride in his service and honors the memory of his accomplishments. After his time in Vietnam, John transitioned into different military roles, and eventually, as part of a program for wounded soldiers, he trained as an air conditioning and refrigeration technician. However, he eventually returned to work for the Army, performing administrative duties before his retirement.

The couple relocated multiple times due to John’s military career, but they eventually settled in Florida, drawn there by Linda’s family and the dream John had long held of moving south. Their move came about six years ago, after John required rehabilitation, and Linda recalls how they were separated for a short time during his treatment. Florida has since become their home, though their only adopted child, whom they lost at the age of 27, remains with them in spirit, a bittersweet part of their journey together.

Linda reflects on the often-overlooked role of military spouses, who endure long separations and uncertainty, supporting their loved ones from afar. She mentions receiving a plaque when John retired, a small but meaningful token of appreciation for her sacrifices.
